Yakutian Laika Health Testing

Ethical breeders health test their dogs before breeding. This is to ensure puppies do not suffer from known hereditary issues and improve a breeds' health as a whole.
Health testing involves examinations done by specialists. The results of these tests should be accessible to future puppy buyers. If a breeder does not provide them, that is a serious red flag.
So far, no genetic research has been done on the Yakutian Laika to determine exactly which issues are common in the breed. For that reason the health testing that is done is based on common issues in related breeds. My information for this list is mostly based on this source.
In Yakutian Laikas these are the recommended test:

Hip/Elbow Dysplasia

Progressive Retinal Atrophy (XLPRA1)

Deafness

Do note; breeders are working with nature, not everything can be tested for, be reasonable and communicative if health issues do pop up.

Yakutian Laika Puppy in the US?

Hello! For the past two months I've been seriously looking into getting another dog and I've decided on a Laika. However I am really having trouble finding breeders in the US. The only breeder I have found so far is https://www.northstar.dog/ but I'd rather have multiple options. I really need help finding responsible breeders here in the US
Or is finding a Laika puppy in the US unrealistic and should I go ahead and start looking for one in Europe?

[Breeds] does anyone know any yakutian laika breeders in my area (Loudoun county/ northern VA)

I'm looking for them because they are so cute and I did a lot of research on them. I also found out that they are tick resistant so that's really cool. Also I have a budget so as cheap as possible would be best. Thanks!

[Help] New to Reddit and need some info on Yakutian Laikas

As the title suggests, I am new to Reddit. I am 19. I am also not new to dogs, but that's enough about me. I should get into why I created this post. I want to know if anyone here has heard of this breed? I am trying to find out as much information as possible about them as I am considering getting one in the near future. Any owners here who could provide me with their experiences? I also want to know if there are even any breeders in the U.S. as I haven't had any luck in searching. So assuming there aren't any in the states, I'd have to start the pain in the ass process of having one imported and I'd prefer to have all information and owner experiences possible before deciding whether or not this dog is right for me and having to try and import. All I have been able to find really is breed information like what is on the AKC site and other sites similar to it. I know Animal Watch made a video on these gorgeous animals, however I was curious to see if the situation was different in the States.

[Breeds] Can you help me find the right breed? I'm struggling and need a bit of direction.

Here are the subs questions and my responses:
1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs? * It will not be my first dog. I grew up with my grandma who bred and trained champion show and hunting dogs, so I picked up a bit pretty early on. I had a beagle I was able to get some rally titles with, and I've shown dogs in agility, rally, obedience and conformation. I presently have a great pyrenees/husky mix and a ACD/husky mix both of which are pretty well trained. I'm starting the pyrenees mix in rally after COVID. I definitely wouldn't say I'm an expert, but I'm not a total novice either. 2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a [reputable breeder]( http://ownresponsibly.blogspot.com/2011/07/identifying-reputable-breeder.html)? * I prefer to get a dog from a breeder. I have two rescues presently and I would like a dog I could show in conformation and possibly begin responsibly breeding dogs myself in the future. 3) Describe your ideal dog. * Loyal, trainable, protective, moderate energy, tolerant of other dogs/strangers even if reserved, a bit of independence (nothing against Labs or Golden's but I don't like a slavishly obedient dog. Can be trained to work off leash and prefers to stay near me, driven but not insanely so. 4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why? * German Shepherd and Rotts, they have many qualities I like but I am concerned that such a dog may be more likely to have separation anxiety and other health problems. I like beaucerons but have heard they can be very snappish and unpredictable and are generally not as handler oriented as a GSD.
I also like the spitz breeds, I adore akitas and malamutes but the low trainability turns me off. I like Bernese mountain dogs and newfies, but their life span is too short. I'm leaning to Yakutian Laika or a Finnish lapphund, since they have many qualities I like but they're difficult to find in my country (US) and I generally prefer a larger breed.
5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do? * Obedience, rally (possibly), conformation, possibly agility, tracking or other activities depending on the breeds natural abilities and proclivities. 6) Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport? * Yes. I am moderately familiar and do have some experience. I am hoping to expand my experience more. **Care Commitments** 7) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day? * I currently train my dogs in 30 minute sessions nearly every day. I play with them generally less but they are walked several times a week and on the weekends go hiking or camping with me and my husband. My current dogs have somewhat limited attention spans but if I had a dog that wanted to work more, I am very willing to meet those requirements. 8) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park? * On average, 30 minutes to an hour. I walk my current dogs about a mile to a nearby field where I let them run and play for another 20-30 minutes and we walk the mile back. I do not do this every day but nearly every weekend they also go camping/hiking where I allow them to explore near me off leash. 9) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly? * Yes, I can do the necessary grooming at home. I trim and brush my pyr mix frequently and wash both dogs at least every 2 months unless needed sooner. **Personal Preferences** 10) What size dog are you looking for? * Medium (like husky size), large to giant, provided the dog has an expected lifespan greater than 8 years or so. I greatly prefer larger dogs. 11) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle? * Any. Bring it on! 12) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area? * Very. It is very very important to me that the dog be able to be trained to do well off leash. **Dog Personality and Behavior** 13) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space? * Snuggly or somewhere in the middle. 14) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please? * More so eager to please, but I don't mind somewhat of an independent streak. 15) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors? * I would like the dog to at least warning bark. I don't care if the dog is distrustful or unfriendly with strangers. I love the pyr protection instinct and I would like a dog that will guard me and my house. 16) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs? * Yes, ONLY if it can tolerate dogs in the same home or dogs of different sex. Me and my husband will probably always have multiple dogs so it will need to tolerate other dogs in the house of the opposite sex. I don't care if it prefers not to be in the company of strange dogs and I rarely go to dog parks. 17) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid? * Escapism, running away, too difficult to reliably train. **Lifestyle** 18) How often and how long will the dog be left alone? * 8 hours a day for 2 days a week. This is subject to change to 8 hours a day more frequently up to 5 days a week. 19) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog? * My husband is also in the house and he prefers a dog that has an off switch and can be calm indoors. He has no real preference of size/hair etc. His involvement will probably be minimal other than occasionally walking, feeding or playing with the dog or asking it to do tricks. 20) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they? * As above, a husky/great pyrenees mix and a cattle dog/husky mix. I also have a cat. 21) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly? * No 22) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease? * No. We own our home. 23) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds? * Aurora, CO and the only banned breeds I'm aware of are pit bulls and similar type dogs. 24) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live? * Summer is in the 80s to 90s occasionally and dry. Snow and cold in the winter, often below freezing. **Additional Information and Questions** 25) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant. * No additional information.
Thank you all so much in advance for your suggestions!

Anyone need pet pictures?

I have 6 dogs, they are all gorgeous. I feel so selfish keeping them to myself, so anybody who needs some cheering up, just PM me a number.
  1. Granola - 7 year old Pit Mix. Best boy ever, gives no fucks. Sleeps 23 hours a day, the rest is spent kicking the other dogs away from him.
  2. Gilmore - 1 year old Old English Sheepdog. Goofiest, most anxious toy stealer. Is taller than you.
  3. Eevee - 2 year old Yakutian Laika. Psycho, affectionate, beautiful, loves to scream her head off. Has an extra toe.
  4. Finnegan - 2 year old Wire Fox Terrier. Very feisty, cuddly as fuck, escape artist, knows every command despite having zero training.
  5. Kari - 2 year old Samoyed Mix. Disabled, vocal, doesn’t know her name, eats poop, is adorable.
  6. Milk - 3 year old Samoyed. Very motherly, loves cats, puppies, babies. Cuddles and grooms all the dogs whether they like it or not.

[Breeds] Help recalling the name of this dog breed?

I happened upon this beautiful breed of dog online a few weeks ago and I didn't save the name. I don't have a dog but I really wanted to show my friend a picture of this breed. Hopefully, you all can help me out. It wasn't a well-known breed as far as I know.
The dog kind of looked like a husky but wasn't one. It had a curly tail and fluffy fur. Looked to be medium-large sized. Its main color is white with black splotches (like cow-type splotches and not husky markings).
Any ideas? It wasn't a border collie, husky, or spitz. :)

To give stolen food or not to give?

I have a one and half year old Yakutian Laika who is full of energy. Usually she is well behaved around food, but has recently been attempting to steal. She does it rarely, and we are working with her on this. But my question is has anyone found it better to just allow her to keep the food and scold she steals or to try to get it back? [PI] Tequila Chihuahua - Flashback - 1232

Tequila Chihuahua
Tequila Chihuahua woke up on the hot sidewalks of New York City. His head throbbed from what felt like a five day bender and he was dirty, stained, cut and bruised. With a wobbly forearm, he weakly picked himself up and instinctively nosed the air. He needed something to clear his hangover and he smelt wafts of coffee, sausage bagels, dew covered flowers and then his nose hit the jackpot. He twinkled his nose and he stretched his neck out further to distinguish the scent; Nebraska raised steak in marsala, potatoes and carrots of Idaho, a robust red wine from Crete and another curious, familiar scent. The deep, rich smell awoke his belly and he trotted following the scents playful wisps as he stumbled into garbage cans, newspaper piles and over bums. There he found it and then he remembered what the other scent was – human bile. Tequila Chihuahua found himself caught in between two worlds, to eat or not to eat. His stomach growled and he shrugged it off as he had eaten worse and as his tongue began to roll out to lap up the meal he heard a dog bellow with laughter in the alley.
He looked up and it was a large mastiff dressed in Arabian garbs. With another hearty laugh the great mastiff said, “Tequila Chihuahua, you crazy bastard. You! Youuuuuu! Only you would would scarf upon such meals. A-hahaha!”
Tequila Chihuahua turned his head towards the mastiff to get a better look at him, quickly glanced at the sidewalk soufflé with hungry and hungover eyes, and then squared himself off with this stranger in the alley.
“I’m sorry, but do I know you?”
This must have been the punchline to a joke that Tequila Chihuahua didn’t know because the Arabian mastiff roared with laughter so much that he fell to his knees. “Hoho, you could say we know each other,” he said with a wink.
“Who are you and how do you know me?” Tequila Chihuahua demanded.
The massive mastiff gathered himself up and lightly bowed, “I am Sheik Aragh Sagi Mastiff, you have been my friend and companion for the last five days.”
“The last five days!” Tequila Chihuahua banged his head. “Where… how…”
More laughter from Sheik Aragh Sagi Mastiff, “Well my mischievous daredevil baradar, we met five days ago in Cuba!”
“Cuba?” Tequilla Chihuahua asked himself. Then he remembered that he was in Cuba eight days ago to open a casino that would give the dealers fifty percent of the profits that they were able to rake in plus an hourly wage. The idea was trickle-down economics, give the Americans a place to unload their capitalist dollars so that the Cuban dealers could spend that money purchasing Cuban cars, houses and more and by spending that money in this way they would be spreading the American dollar to more Cubans through hardwork and good investments. Well, that was at least Tequilla Chihuahua’s idea of trickle-down economics.
Then the hairs on his back raised as he remembered that it was opening night of his casino, Moon Bay, and he was slurring his words with a couple of bitches when in walked a Soviet Dog. Tequila Chihuahua growled, “Vodka Yakutian Laika.”
Eight days earlier Tequila Chihuahua was at his club, Moon Bay, for the ribbon opening ceremony. Mayor Rum Havanese handed him the scissors and after a quick pose and a parade of paparazzi flashes he cut the ribbon and opened the door to his first customers.
As the night wore on Tequila Chihuahua loosened up with drinks, dances and games while being accompanied by Mayor Rum Havanese.
At a craps table Rum Havanese grabbed the dice and held them out for Tequila Chihuahua to blow on. Tequila Chihuahua held his head back and said, “Ahem, no.”
“Ah, but would you do it for Cuba?”
“Eh?”
“If I roll and lose then this fine gentleman gets half of my bet, no?”
“That is correct, he will get half of it.”
“Then blow on it for Cuba.”
Tequilla Chihuahua said, “What the heck, for Cuba!”
He downed his drink and then blew on the dice. Rum Havanese shook them in his paws and rolled them. They bounced once, twice, three times and then they hit the back wall and rolled back to the middle of the table and as all eyes watched the dice rolled an eight and the crowd barked with pleasure.
“I’m sorry for your loss,” Tequila Chihuahua said.
“Ah, but here, a loss for me is a win for Cuba!”
“Well, I must take my leave and mingle with the crowd, have a good evening Rum Havanese.”
“And you as well – come on seven!” He rolled and lost again.
Tequila Chihuahua walked down the balcony to the dance floor and went to the bar, “A Salty Chihuahua, fresh not artificial.” Even though he stocked the bars with fresh fruits for all of his drinks it was just his habit to request fresh and not artificial flavorings.
As he took his first sip in walked a bunch of bruiser dogs dressed in what can only be described as the unfashionable garb of the comrade communist. Like a pack of wolves spreading out to attack a weak calf the dogs went to gambling tables, girls, the bar and Tequila Chihuahua realized he was letting his imagination go wild and that they were just there to have fun. Except for one dog, one of them came straight to him and pointed directly at him.
“You,” he said with a thick Russian accent, “I challenge you to a dance off!”
“What?”
The Russian dog raised his dukes and said, “Would you rather have a challenge of fists?”
“What?”
“Hahaha,” the Rusky laughed as he walked over to the DJ. Then the dog walked into the center of the dance floor as Ricky Martin’s La Mordidita began to play.
Tequila Chihuahua just shook his head no and rolled his eyes when the Russian Dog started doing the Hopak - also known as the Cossack Dance. But then Tequila Chihuahua noticed that the bitches were digging the idea of two dogs showing their prowess through dancing and not fighting, but still.
“Are you chicken? Bwak bwak!” And then the dog mixed the chicken dance with the Cossack dance.
“Oh hell no you didn’t just do the chicken dance to Ricky Martin!”
Tequila Chihuahua did a flexible, fluid and fast salsa to the Ruskies brutish, but on tempo, thigh flex kick and jump. Back and forth they went, harder, faster and sweatier until they were both spinning at the song's climax and the crowd howled with delight.
Then a new song played and the dance floor filled again and Russian dog walked up to Tequilla Chihuahua, “You dance good, come, let me buy you a drink.”
“This is my place, the drinks are on me.”
“Ah,” he said pulling out his wallet, “but this is my money and the drinks are on me.”
After they ordered their drinks Tequila Chihuahua asked, “So, of all the gin joints in the world, why did you want to waltz with me?”
“Because I have heard that you are a dog of many talents and I have a proposition for you.”
Eight days later, in New York City, Tequila Chihuahua was standing in an alley dirty and bruised and extremely angry.
[not sure what i'm doing with this, just belted it out in the last hour when i saw the contest, hope you enjoyed it!]

SAMOYED OF OTHER COLORS

Hi!! In the future I am planning to get a Samoyed. The thing is that Samoyed are pure white dogs and they get dirty very easily...So is there any place or breeders who breed Samoyed Mixes that are multiple colors? Or do you have any pictures? Thanks.
